What suitcase should I bring to Europe? Duffel bag (shoulder strap) or Roller (side handle)?
I will be walking around A LOT and there will be lots of stairs, cobble streets, and trains, subways and other places where I have to stow it away. Do you think i shoudl use my Duffel bag with no wheels but a shoudler strap, or my roller suitcase? Bother are the same size.
Actually if you are going to be walking a lot through Europe I would recommend using a backpack with two really cushy, big shoulder straps and a waistbelt. If you use a duffel it will probably start cutting into your shoulder after a while and roller suitcases are a nuisance in ancient European cities.
I went backpacking through Scotland using a bag I bought from ricksteves.com and it was great. The best $100 I ever spent. The waistbelt settled most of the weight on my hips and the shoulder straps were so padded it felt like the pack weighed nothing at all.
If you can’t spend any more money on getting a new bag though, I guess a duffel would be better than a roller suitcase. Just make sure the shoulder strap is super padded and comfortable. Try packing what you will be taking to Europe in your duffel and carry it around for a while to see how comfortable it is. Then you’ll know if you can handle it.
