Comic books from 70′s – what was on the inside cover (back or front)?

I know this is a wierd question, but here’s the back story. I grew up in another country and didn’t speak any English at the time. My aunt would occasionally send us care packages including comics. I didn’t know any of the characters then, so I have no idea which characters or which company (Marvel or something else) they were. I remember being intrigued not so much by the comics themselves, but on the inside cover there were pictures of various items, like lantern, tent, duffle bag, etc. Looking back it seemed like they were prizes for doing something (possibly selling comics or for some other contest). I don’t personally know anyone who collects comics to ask them, so can anyone here tell me what the point of those things on the inside cover were? I know it’s not much information, but that’s all I can remember.

it was an ad for a company (American Specialty or GRIT magazine) that gave out prizes (presumably to kids) instead of financial reward for selling their products…
